DescriptionIndia One Anna is a collage of popular cultural imagery of colonial and postcolonial India. The subject of this collage is Indian “Nautch” (dance) girls, represented in two digitally colourized vintage North Indian photographs (circa 1905). The Indian one anna coins in the image, issued by the British East India Co., allude to the dancers’ reliance on payment for their performances. One dancer is performing Mor Ka Nach (Dance of the Peacock) wherein she takes the role of a peacock attracting a peahen, spreading out her skirt in an imitation of the bird's tail-feathers.
