DescriptionThis abstracted collage composition is composed of images of an abandoned building and the snow that has fallen through the burned-out roof. The structure of the images when reassembled gives a simultaneous sense of continuity and disorder, the architecture of the piece broken up by the gaps between the pieces of the image. The snow in the lower area of the image blends in with the white background, creating a sense of isolation. The photomontage technique used in this work is called panography or “joiners”, an artistic technique popularized by English artist David Hockney.
These composite works explore the fragmented stories of abandoned urban landscapes. Created by Jeff Winch, a faculty member of the Media Studies Department, these pieces evoke the layered histories of sites after they have been voided of human intervention.
