Melanie Authier, Scavenger, 2010
Scavenger
2010
Artist RegionOntario
DescriptionDemonstrative of Authier’s distinctive visual style, Scavenger features a lush and complex composition that incorporates angular, naturalistic forms evoking cliffs and mountains, blended with sweeping, feathered brushstrokes. The colours of this imagined landscape are dreamlike, rich plums, vibrant reds and deep blues against pastel pinks, greys and tans. The varying planes of the work constantly push and pull the viewer between the foreground and background, and between angles and soft edges. Authier works from a conjured temporal locale, often inspired by natural forms such as caves and cliffs when creating these imagined landscapes. The composition pulls towards the centre of the canvas in a counter-clockwise manner, evoking the endless pace of a whirlpool, tornado or galaxy.
