Rajni Perera, Ambush Upon Entry, 2016
Ambush Upon Entry
2016
Artist RegionOntario
DescriptionThis work, commissioned for Humber Galleries, continues to echo Perera's themes from her other works in the collection, drawing inspiration from the Afrofuturism movement by portraying people of colour as science fiction heroes and protagonists. Perera's work exists in conversation with current issues of representation and cultural appropriation in media, particularly in science fiction and fantasy, which often draws inspiration from the art and stories created by non-Western cultures, but fails to accurately represent people of colour on screen. This gouache painting depicts an outer space battle between two factions, one made up of powerful women of colour, the other of beings that appear to be elemental creatures composed of the fabric of space itself.
