Wanda Koop is one of Canada’s foremost contemporary artists, reinterpreting and exploring scenes of industrialization, technology, and warfare with her monumental installations that incorporate traditional, video, and performance art. Born in 1951 to parents who escaped the Russian Revolution, her work, most notably the Green Zone series, draws inspiration from news footage and other imagery derived from broadcast media, distilling these images to their most arresting elements in order to examine the collective cultural desensitization to images of warfare and destruction. Her work has been exhibited around the world, including Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Japan, India, China, and Italy in addition to the US and Canada, and she was honoured with the Order of Canada in 2006 for her artistic and cultural contributions.
